Saturn’s Wake-Up Call: How to Thrive During Your Saturn Return
Tools and Tips to Help You Align with Your True Path During Saturn’s Influence
Have you ever heard someone mention their Saturn return as one of the most difficult times of their life? You might wonder if everyone goes through a Saturn return and, if so, whether yours will be just as challenging.
First, let's explore what a Saturn return actually is. When you're born, there’s a snapshot of the sky known as your natal birth chart. Most of us are familiar with our Sun sign and might even identify with the traits associated with it. However, what many don’t realize is that the Moon, along with the other planets, also occupies a zodiac sign that may be different from your Sun sign. One of these planetary placements is Saturn.
You probably learned in grade school that the further a planet is from the Sun, the longer it takes to complete its orbit. Earth takes approximately 365 days to circle the Sun, while fast-moving Mercury takes just 88 days. Saturn, being much farther from the Sun, has a slower orbit, taking about 29.4 Earth years to complete one full cycle. When Saturn returns to the same position in the sky as it was at your birth, this is what we call a Saturn return.
So, what makes Saturn such a significant topic? Saturn is the planet associated with discipline, hard work, institutions, responsibility, and taking ownership. It governs structure, limitations, and boundaries. I like to think of Saturn as a bit of a stern, wise elder—offering tough love and practical advice. It embodies the "put your nose to the grindstone" or "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" energy. During a Saturn return, we often feel the weight of responsibility, as we’re required to make decisions about the future and the direction of our lives.
Despite its stern nature, Saturn's influence is necessary. When we lean into Saturn's energy, we can achieve great things. Saturn pushes us to set goals, develop discipline, and persevere until we reach our highest potential. It encourages focus and patience, allowing things to unfold in their own time. Saturn teaches us to mature, shifting from impulsive actions to thoughtful planning.
For many of us, our first Saturn return can feel like a rude awakening. We’re nearing the end of our third decade, a time when we naturally start reflecting on home, family, close relationships, and career. It’s a period of asking ourselves if we’re truly on the right path. We may find ourselves reviewing past decisions and facing some tough questions. For instance, perhaps you followed in your parents’ footsteps when it came to your career or family life. Yet deep down, you always wanted something different but suppressed those desires to meet the expectations placed on you. Now, you might feel a sense of loss or confusion, realizing that the path you chose, which was sold as the key to happiness, has left you feeling unsatisfied and possibly stuck.
Here’s the great thing about Saturn: if you’re willing to put in the work and make changes that align with your true self, Saturn can reward you richly. Saturn isn’t here to punish; it’s here to offer a check-in. When you were born, your birth chart laid out the potential for all the amazing things your soul is meant to achieve. But often, societal expectations steer us away from that path. Saturn is nudging you back, reminding you that it’s never too late to pivot and make the changes that will lead to genuine happiness.
How Do You Know When You’re in Your Saturn Return?
So, how can you tell if you're currently experiencing your Saturn return? The simplest way is to look at your birth chart, specifically where Saturn was located when you were born. If you know your exact birth time, location, and date, you can easily find this information using an astrology chart calculator. Your Saturn return occurs when Saturn, in its current orbit, returns to the exact degree and sign it was in when you were born—this happens around the ages of 29 to 30 for most people.
If you don’t have access to your birth chart, there are a few life events that often signal the arrival of a Saturn return. You may notice a heightened sense of responsibility, a growing awareness of where your life feels misaligned, and a deep desire to reevaluate important aspects like career, relationships, or long-term goals. It's common to feel a sense of pressure or urgency to make major life changes during this time. Saturn’s energy pushes us to confront our limits, step up to the plate, and start taking ownership of our lives.
Astrologically, for those currently experiencing their Saturn return in Pisces (born between May 21, 1993, and April 7, 1996), this transit is particularly emotional, encouraging deep introspection and spiritual growth. Saturn’s retrograde phase can extend this experience, offering even more opportunities to reassess and realign with your true path.
So far, we’ve only spoken about our first Saturn return. Most of us experience two Saturn returns in our lifetime: the first in our late twenties and the second around the age of 58 or 59. The second Saturn return offers a second chance to get back on track, as life often takes us in unexpected directions. This is a time when we might be caring for aging parents or coming to terms with the fact that our children are grown and no longer need us in the same way. It’s also a period where thoughts about mortality and the legacy we want to leave behind begin to surface. We realize how quickly life has passed, and that we are closer to the end than the beginning.
While the second Saturn return may not feel as dramatic as the first, it is by no means easy. At this stage of life, we often face more obstacles in realigning with our true path. We may have homes full of memories, objects with sentimental value, concerns about retirement, and worries about our health and longevity. On a personal note, I often find myself glancing at the obituaries of celebrities and realizing many are passing away within 20 years of my current age. It’s like an internal alarm reminding us that our time is limited.
As a quick reference, you can use the chart below to determine the approximate time of your Saturn returns. Please note that your Saturn return won’t last the entire time period listed. Saturn returns typically span anywhere from 4 months to a year, depending on the degree of your Saturn placement in your birth chart and whether Saturn goes retrograde during your return. Since Saturn goes retrograde every year for approximately four and a half months (appearing to move backward due to Earth’s orbit), this can extend the influence of your Saturn return.
Now that you have an idea of when your Saturn return will start, let’s dive deeper into narrowing down the timeframe. For example, my Saturn is at 10° Pisces, and I began to feel its effects when transiting Saturn entered my natal Saturn sign at 2°. This is because Saturn has approximately a 6° to 8° orb of influence. The impact of my Saturn return will diminish once transiting Saturn moves past 18°. However, as I mentioned earlier, Saturn often goes retrograde, moving back toward the natal Saturn.
At the time of writing, Saturn is retrograde at 15°, which is within 5° of my natal Saturn at 10°. Saturn will go direct in Pisces on November 15, 2024, at 12°, and it won’t be out of orb for me until mid-February 2025. As you can see, with retrogrades, a Saturn return can last up to a year—or even longer in rare cases. Keep in mind, not everyone experiences the full effects of a Saturn retrograde during their return. However, one could argue that Saturn retrograde offers more time to figure things out, providing grace and patience to make the smartest choices based on your circumstances and life path.
So, what kind of pivots can people expect during a Saturn return? Reflecting on my first Saturn return, I went through significant changes in my relationships. In 1991, my ex-husband and I separated. By early 1993, I had started a romantic relationship with a long-time platonic friend. We had a great connection, but because I was still technically married, it put a strain on the relationship. By early 1994, when Saturn entered Pisces, he kept being asked when the divorce would be finalized. I don’t blame him—I’m not sure I would have had the patience, either. During that time, my ex-husband kept hiring and firing lawyers, delaying the divorce. Though he didn’t want to be married, he didn’t want to be divorced either. He essentially wanted to keep me as a backup plan, which I wasn’t willing to accept.
As Saturn transited my natal Saturn, the new relationship ended. Just a couple of weeks later, Saturn went retrograde. Two months after the breakup, my divorce finally went through. At the time, I felt stripped and alone—divorced and without the companionship of someone I once considered one of my best friends. Beyond that, due to pressure from family and my ex-husband, I left my previous job and took back over the business my ex-husband and I had owned. It was a terrible decision, driven by other people’s opinions rather than my gut instinct. This led to significant financial stress and deep doubts about my own ability to make decisions for my life.
Though Saturn was no longer within orb, when it transitioned from Pisces into Aries, I decided to close the business and took a job that would help further my career. Saturn stripped away everything that wasn’t working for me and illuminated the importance of trusting my inner voice and instincts, rather than relying on the opinions of others. This period was probably the most stressful of my life, but what I gained was clarity and a deeper understanding of my own intuition. I also learned patience—something I lacked back then. The biggest lesson of all was learning to have faith that things would work out in the end. Though the relationship I was in during that time was warm and friendly, we weren’t meant for each other. We had two different life paths and beliefs. While in that relationship, I felt like I had to hide much of who I was to make it work.
So, when people say that Saturn can cause major upheavals in your life, they’re absolutely right. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. Your first Saturn return is an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply. What are your true wants and desires? Ask yourself if your decisions are based on what society expects from you, or if you're truly following your own path. Be aware, though, that if you're living according to someone else's vision instead of your own, Saturn is likely to step in and "clean house" for you. Saturn doesn’t do this out of spite; rather, it acts like a cosmic remover of obstacles, much like the deity Ganesha in Hinduism. Saturn clears the way, allowing for new beginnings by removing what’s blocking your true potential.
Saturn returns often bring major life transitions, including the end of relationships that no longer align with our path.
You might be wondering now: How do you get through a Saturn return without too much turmoil? While it’s nearly impossible to avoid all upheaval, that doesn’t mean you can’t navigate this astrological event with grace. My first recommendation is to explore your North and South Nodes in your astrological chart. In astrology, we often focus on the "big three"—the Rising sign, Sun sign, and Moon sign. While these are important aspects of your personality and emotions, they don’t necessarily reflect what you're meant to learn in this lifetime. That’s where the North Node comes in. The North Node is like a bright, flashing arrow pointing you toward your true path. When we ignore that path, we stunt our growth. In my own Saturn return, I was regressing by clinging to what was comfortable, instead of embracing my potential.
To find your North Node, look for the symbol in your birth chart—it looks like an upside-down horseshoe (☊). If you don’t have your birth chart, you can generate one online using your birth date, time, and location. Your North Node represents the path of growth and purpose you’re meant to follow in this lifetime. During your Saturn return, aligning with your North Node can provide key insights to help you navigate the changes and challenges that arise.
As you go through your Saturn return, consider the following questions based on your North Node sign:
North Node in Aries: Are you taking initiative and stepping into your own power? What actions can you take to assert your independence during this Saturn return?
North Node in Taurus: Are you creating stability and building self-worth? What long-term security can you establish, and how can you prioritize simplicity and patience during this period?
North Node in Gemini: Are you open to learning and communication? How can you adapt to new information and share your thoughts more openly during your Saturn return?
North Node in Cancer: Are you nurturing your emotional well-being and family connections? What steps can you take to create a sense of home and deepen your emotional bonds?
North Node in Leo: Are you embracing your creativity and confidence? How can you express yourself authentically and step into leadership during this time of transformation?
North Node in Virgo: Are you organizing your life and offering service to others? What practical skills can you develop, and how can you find satisfaction in the details?
North Node in Libra: Are you fostering harmony and balance in your relationships? What can you do to create equality in your partnerships and practice diplomacy during your Saturn return?
North Node in Scorpio: Are you embracing transformation and deep emotional connections? What fears can you confront, and how can you navigate the intense emotions that arise during this time?
North Node in Sagittarius: Are you expanding your perspective and seeking wisdom? How can you explore new ideas and find deeper meaning in the challenges Saturn presents?
North Node in Capricorn: Are you taking responsibility and mastering self-discipline? What can you do to build long-term success and embrace leadership during your Saturn return?
North Node in Aquarius: Are you aligning with innovation and community progress? How can you think outside the box and contribute to the greater good during this period of growth?
North Node in Pisces: Are you leaning into faith and spirituality? What can you change in your life by trusting your intuition and understanding your connection to the spiritual side of this Saturn return?
Now that you’ve explored your North Node, let’s shift our focus back to your Saturn placement. The sign your Saturn occupies reveals the areas of life where you’ll face your greatest challenges and where Saturn is calling you to wake up. Consider the questions below as you reflect on how this Saturn return is urging you to confront these themes.
Saturn in Aries: Are you too focused on independence at the expense of collaboration? Are you charging ahead without thinking things through, or avoiding taking responsibility for your actions?
Saturn in Taurus: Are you stuck in patterns of materialism or resisting change? Are you clinging to comfort and security rather than pushing yourself to grow?
Saturn in Gemini: Are you scattered in your focus, jumping from one thing to the next without mastering any of them? Are you relying too much on intellect without really communicating your true emotions?
Saturn in Cancer: Are you overly dependent on others for emotional support? Are you avoiding dealing with unresolved family issues or retreating into the past rather than moving forward?
Saturn in Leo: Are you too focused on receiving recognition and praise? Are you hiding your true self out of fear of failure, or are you seeking validation in ways that don’t align with your authentic self?
Saturn in Virgo: Are you overly critical of yourself and others? Are you stuck in perfectionism, avoiding action because you feel things aren’t “good enough” yet?
Saturn in Libra: Are you compromising too much to keep the peace? Are you avoiding conflict at the expense of your own needs or struggling to make decisions due to a fear of upsetting others?
Saturn in Scorpio: Are you holding onto past hurts and refusing to let go? Are you overly focused on control, secrecy, or avoiding vulnerability?
Saturn in Sagittarius: Are you restless, jumping from idea to idea without committing to any of them? Are you running away from responsibilities in the pursuit of freedom, without considering the long-term impact of your actions?
Saturn in Capricorn: Are you overworking or allowing ambition to consume your life? Are you placing too much value on external success and authority, while neglecting your personal needs and inner happiness?
Saturn in Aquarius: Are you isolating yourself or resisting collaboration? Are you rejecting tradition and authority without finding a practical path forward, or are you struggling to accept your own uniqueness?
Saturn in Pisces: Are you avoiding reality and escaping into fantasy? Are you being too passive, letting life happen to you rather than taking charge, or are you neglecting your spiritual ideals in your everyday life?

Practical Tips for Navigating Your Saturn Return in Pisces
As we circle back to the current Saturn return in Pisces, it’s important to remember that this is a deeply spiritual and introspective time. Whether or not you have Saturn in Pisces, these tips can be especially powerful during this transit, as they tap into the Piscean themes of spirituality, emotional release, and higher consciousness. By embracing these practices, you can align more fully with the energy of this Saturn return and move through it with more grace and understanding.
Breathe deeply: Start with something simple—your breath. Slowly inhale and exhale deeply, focusing on emptying your lungs completely with each breath. It may sound basic, but mindful breathing can help calm the mind and center your emotions, which is vital when Saturn in Pisces pushes you to face hidden feelings.
Yoga for emotional release: Yoga is a powerful tool for releasing stored emotions, especially under Piscean influence. If you’re new to yoga, try a home practice or find a quiet corner in a class where you feel comfortable. Allow yourself to feel any emotions that come up as you move through poses—Saturn in Pisces encourages this kind of deep, inner release.
Meditate and balance your chakras: Meditation, particularly guided meditations, can help quiet the mind and connect you to your higher consciousness. Balancing your chakras or visualizing peace and clarity can be grounding, especially during a time when Piscean energy asks us to connect with our spiritual side.
Reconnect with nature: Pisces energy tends to float away from the physical, so grounding in nature can be especially healing. Take time to appreciate the simple beauty of the trees, flowers, or even animals you encounter. This helps you reconnect to the Earth and feel more centered in your body and emotions.
Water as a healing element: Pisces is a water sign, and spending time near water can be incredibly therapeutic. Whether it’s a walk by a creek, sitting by the ocean, or simply enjoying a long bath, water helps release pent-up emotions and encourages your natural flow of energy.
Limit negative media: What you consume matters, especially during a sensitive period like Saturn in Pisces. Avoid violent, sad, or negative media as it can drain your emotional reserves. Instead, fill your time with comedies, light-hearted programs, and uplifting content to support your emotional well-being.
Music as a mood-lifter: Music is powerful, and the right kind can soothe the soul. While you may have a go-to genre, consider listening to something more uplifting or light-hearted when the energy of Saturn in Pisces feels too heavy. Even silly pop songs have their place in raising your vibration.
Consider your diet: While this may be more personal, for some, cutting back on meat can make a significant difference. Pisces energy is highly empathic, and some may find they feel lighter and more connected to their spiritual self by reducing or eliminating animal products from their diet. This can help align your physical body with the emotional and spiritual healing Pisces offers.
These practices are not just for those with Saturn in Pisces, but they carry a special resonance with the Piscean energy of spirituality, intuition, and emotional healing. By incorporating them into your routine, you can better navigate the challenges and transformations of your Saturn return.

Feel free to share your own experiences with your Saturn return in the comments below! I’d love to hear how this transformative time is unfolding for you.
I had my daughter during my first Saturn return so I had to grow up fast in order to assume the responsibilities of being a parent. At my second Saturn return and my daughter's first Saturn return, I had a financial meltdown, lost the house I was renting, and had to move in with her. It was like our roles reversed and she became the mother to me, the child who couldn't get her finances in order. I've had to claw my way back to a semblance of financial stability, and while I don't have the income that I would like to have, I'm doing a whole lot better than I was 14 years ago. Perhaps at my 3rd Saturn return at 90, if I live that long, I'll have the kind of financial stability I've longed for. Saturn and I should be best buds by then.
